Red Extreme Heat Warning
Following the issuing of a Red Extreme Heat Warning for South Wales for Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June, in consultation with the Chair of Governors and in liaison with schools across Newport, I have made the decision to close the school on Wednesday and Thursday on Health and Safety Grounds.
Having undertaken a risk assessment considering current temperatures (which averaged between 27 and 30 degrees in classrooms today) and having put in place control measures to mitigate risk already, with temperatures set to rise an additional 5 degrees tomorrow, we feel strongly that it would be putting all members of our school community at an unnecessary risk to open the school.
I will speak with children today to inform them of this decision. Children will be set appropriate learning to undertake over the two-day period; please encourage them to undertake this learning at times when they are most comfortable and when temperatures are a little lower. I will of course continue to remind our children of the importance of staying safe and playing safely in such high temperatures; and of the importance of keeping hydrated and utilising shaded areas.
Parents of children who are entitled to free school meals (not universal free meal provision) are able to pick up packed lunches from school should they require them. Those families will be sent a Microsoft form shortly asking them to confirm if they would like to request a lunch. Please complete this form by 1.30pm today.
School will return to our usual routine on Friday as temperatures are returning to what would be considered more normal for this time of year. We will therefore look forward to welcoming all our pupils back to school in PE uniform/kit on Friday 26th June.
